Two suicide blasts in Afghanistan

KABUL (Reuters) - An Afghan civilian was killed and at least nine wounded in two suicide attacks in the south of the country on Wednesday, the latest in a wave of violence in the region.

Separately, a soldier from the NATO-led force was killed bya roadside bomb during a patrol in eastern Afghanistan, thealliance said. Four soldiers were wounded.

In the first of the suicide attacks, a bomber attacked apolice vehicle in Laskar Gah, the provincial capital ofsouthern Helmand province, killing a civilian and woundingseven, a security official said.

Another attack took place at the entrance to a buildingused as base by Afghan and foreign troops in the south-easternprovince of Khost, officials from the province said, adding twoAfghan forces were wounded.

The blast took place after guards fired at a vehiclecarrying two suspected bombers dressed in army uniform, anofficial said.

Violence has escalated in Afghanistan in the past twoyears, the bloodiest period since Taliban's removal from powerin 2001.

The al Qaeda-backed Taliban largely rely on suicide attacksand roadside bomb blasts as part of their insurgency againstthe government and foreign troops.
